Winnie M Li had her second novel COMPLICIT published in 2022. The New York Times called it ‘harrowing, timely, and thoroughly book-club-worthy,’ and The Irish Times called it ‘spellbinding.’ COMPLICIT explores questions raised by the #MeToo movement and the dark side of Hollywood. In writing it, Winnie drew upon her own knowledge of the industry as a former film producer. Winnie received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Ireland in recognition of her writing and advocacy. She’s also a PhD researcher at the London School of Economics on media representation of these issues. Winnie was the victim of a violent assault and rape in Belfast in 2008. Her highly acclaimed debut novel about this, Dark Chapter, has been translated into ten languages and won The Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize. Winnie completed her Masters in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London and founded the UK’s first-ever festival dedicated to talking about sexual and consent through the arts and discussion. As a 2001 Mitchell Scholar, Winnie received an MA in English from UCC. A volunteer at the Cork Film Festival, the contacts Winnie made in Ireland led to her first professional film industry role, with a London production company where she was involved in making six feature films and an Oscar-nominated short. She went on to become the Film Series Producer of the Doha Film Institute in Qatar. Winnie obtained her undergraduate degree from Harvard.
