Matt is the Dean of the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, the largest college at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Matt's own research focuses on the design of computer technology to benefit people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) or have low levels of written-language literacy. He directs a team of over 30 researchers, approximately 1/3 of whom are DHH, and his lab operates bilingually in English and American Sign Language (ASL). He’s received over $5.1 million in funding from NSF, Microsoft, and other sponsors, and he has received the Best Paper Award at the ACM SIGACCESS conference, the top research venue in the field of computing accessibility five times, more than anyone in the history of the conference. In 2018, RIT awarded him the Trustee's Scholarship Award, the university's highest honor for faculty research, and in 2017, the Association for Computing Machinery named him a Distinguished Member, for his contributions to the field of computing. Matt received a Master's Degree in Computer Science from University College Dublin; his thesis examined how to design computer user-interfaces people with low literacy. After returning to the United States, Matt obtained a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a tenured associate professor at City University of New York for 8 years, before moving to RIT in 2014. Matt obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware.
