Medicine/Healthcare

Markus Weisner currently works at a large trauma hospital located in Berlin (Germany) and is applying to several emergency medicine residency programs. At the "Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin," Markus teaches various emergency medicine classes to both in-hospital staff and a wide range of outside clients, including maritime physicians for cruise ships and paramedics from a large underground mining operation. Before enrolling in Charité Medical School (Berlin), Markus worked as a paramedic-firefighter for the City of Charlottesville and founded FireGeek, a management and logistics consultancy firm serving the needs of fire departments. He has worked with clients throughout the US and Canada to improve response times and to ensure reliable unit availability during peak hours. Through a combination of mapping and statistical analysis techniques, Markus has helped public safety agencies to improve station location layouts and optimize fire apparatus distribution. Markus was part of the Class of 2006 Mitchell Scholars and came to Ireland with a particular interest in public policy regarding firefighting, emergency management, and emergency medicine. During his Mitchell year, he completed a postgraduate diploma in fire safety practice, interned for the Dublin Fire Brigade, and participated in the Trinity MBA program with an emphasis on the development of an improved firefighting entry tool that he later successfully patented. For fun, Markus teaches several Cuban salsa courses each week, performs improv comedy, and restores antique bikes. Markus obtained an undergraduate engineering degree from the University of Virginia.
