Adam Tart recently joined OpenAI as a software engineer, after thirteen years at Google, to work on the infrastructure behind OpenAI's products including ChatGPT. His primary focus currently is to help start a team working on observability -- the collection and analysis of telemetry data to better understand what ChatGPT's infrastructure is doing under the hood, to help improve its performance and reliability. At Google, Adam was the Tech Lead of a Systems Infrastructure Performance team in the Machine Learning, Systems, and Cloud AI organization. Prior to that, he was the Uber Tech Lead of Google's Monarch Query Team, where he spent almost a decade scaling Monarch into one of Google's largest core systems -- a real-time time series database and query engine that powers Google-wide observability, automation, and analytics. These projects and teams have provided a dynamic experience for Adam, as they straddle the line between fascinating theory and real-world impact, and between the fields of computer science and mathematics. Adam, a 2009 Mitchell Scholar, received a master of science degree in Mobile Networking and Computing from University College Cork, and prior to that a master of science degree in Statistics and bachelor of science degree in Discrete Mathematics from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
