Based in Bethesda, Maryland, José is applying the principles of social entrepreneurship to legal practice. A graduate of Georgetown Law School, he founded The Canto Law Firm in order to pursue his passion for public interest and pro bono work. Half of his time is spent representing commercial clients, the income from which allows him to offer legal services to the poor and underprivileged. A litigator, his legal practice comprises family law, employment law, estates and trusts, commercial litigation and criminal defense.
José is a 2009 Mitchell Scholar. He received a Master's Degree in Sociology from University College Dublin. His thesis research presented a sociological analysis of the post-war Nuremberg trials, examining the power dynamic between the Allied and Axis powers as well as the interaction between the legal teams and the court during the trial. While in Ireland José worked as a research assistant to Professor Diana Panke on a project analyzing the political reality facing small states in the EU.
Jose recently celebrated the second anniversary of his law firm and he was recognized by the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service for his efforts to expand access to justice to Spanish-speaking clients in complex family law cases.
Jose obtained his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
