Sarang is a lawyer and a PhD student in Political Science at UC Berkeley, living in San Francisco. He is also an organizer of the Hewlett Foundation-supported Berkeley Economy and Society Initiative and founder of the Law and Political Economy Society at Berkeley Law. His research focus is on the relationship between law and political economy, the influence of international political economy and neoliberalism on money in politics and polarization, corruption and democracy, and political philosophy and epistemology. Prior to entering law school, he worked as a writer and editor at Crowdpac in San Francisco, Palantir Technologies in Palo Alto, and MapLight in Berkeley. He was also the founder of Distilled Magazine, an occasional publication about politics and current affairs. Sarang is a 2010 Mitchell Scholar. He received a Master's Degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin. Sarang volunteered with Fighting Words, a Dublin based non-profit organization founded by Roddy Doyle devoted to teaching young people creative writing skills and engaging them in literacy programs. He grew more interested in politics after witnessing the impact of the global financial crisis on Ireland and the failure of political systems and leadership in Ireland and internationally to prevent it from happening. Sarang obtained his undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and studied applied mathematics at Cambridge and computational neuroscience at Technische Universität Berlin.
